What does “Short Stories” Mean?

For me, a short story is a compact, self-contained view into a character’s world, one that relies on atmosphere and internal conflict rather than sprawling plots or large casts. Sometimes, the stories talk about only the character, other times, there is a plot in which a maximum of four characters are present.

  1. My short stories zooms in on a single situation, sensation, or decision. You don’t need a dozen scenes; you need one powerful image or one moment of crisis.
  2. Every detail serves mood. A short story uses description sparingly but precisely, so that readers feel the character.
  3. There may be little external action, but the character’s interior conflict carries the narrative. Your outcast isn’t racing anywhere or in a huge mission determining his success or failure; he’s driven by existential curiosity and the manipulations of philosophy. A strong short story gives us direct access to those private thoughts and obsessions, such as my stories try to do.
  4. Rather than spelling everything out, my short stories work by suggestion. Endings can be abrupt or ambiguous, with no absolute and defining end.
